Welcome to the Amsterdam Jewish Studies Program

Located in the heart of historic Amsterdam, the department of Hebrew and Jewish Studies at University of Amsterdam welcomes students from all over the world and various backgrounds for a challenging interdisciplinary program in Jewish Studies. We offer a variety of programs: from bachelor (including an Honour’s trajectory) to master and Ph.D studies.

Jewish Studies in Amsterdam is characterized by its broad character and at the same time its emphasis on in-depth studies. 3,000 years of Jewish culture and heritage are studied through the lenses of history, literature, languages and philosophy. Next to intensive courses on multiple levels of Hebrew, classes range from the Hebrew Bible to Israeli movies, from the Talmud to Jewish booklore. Students are encouraged to develop their own fields of specialization. Many courses are also open for students of other faculties and universities.

The department organizes many extra-curricular activities such as the yearly intensive Bisschofsheim Winterulpan, (advanced Hebrew language classes) which is offered free for students from all over the world, a Winter School for graduate students both in Amsterdam and abroad and a Hebrew translation contest.

The study program is in many ways entangled with the famous Amsterdam Jewish heritage collections such as the Portuguese Jewish community’s Ets Haim library, the Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana, the Jewish Historical Museum, and the City Archives.

Our faculty consists of highly respected scholars (one of them is also an Israeli novelist) whose expertise ranges from the biblical era to medieval Jewish cultures and Jewish enlightenment movements; Hebrew language and literature to Jewish book history and Jewish digital humanities; and Dutch Jewish history to histories of Jewish nationalisms and the state of Israel.
